4518. Henry Harris Sasnett

1Judge Frank L. Little, Sasnett Family Records Book, Elizabeth deParry, 4748 Aberdeen Dr, Ann Arbor, MI 48103. Written about 1910. "Henry Harris Sasnett, named for his maternal Grand-father after attending the Sparta High School, entered the East Alabama Male College at Auburn, Alabama in 1860, and remained in attendance there until 1861, when the approach of the Civil war disbanded all our Southern Colleges. Then Harris comes home and joined company with his brother William and myself and went to Virginia as a soldier. He was quite young and immature, and soon fell a victim to Camp fever, and was removed to the hospital in Richmond, for treatment. This was in the early fall of 1861 and his condition brought his ever faithful mother to his bedside to nurse and care for him. When somewhat convalescent Hon. Alexander H. Stephens Vice-President of the Confederate States took a special interest his condition and induced his mother to have him discharged. This was easily done, and he returned home, and after complete recovery of his health re-intered the service as a member of the Terrell Artillery doing service on the coast near Savannah, Ga. He remained with that company during the remainder of the war. Members of that command have told the writer that he made a fine soldier and was brave and aggressive in battle. His company was actively engaged in the battle of Bentonville, where he was seen to demean himself with conspicuous courage. During the war he married Miss Mary E. Cubbage of Savannah, Ga. and reared a family of three sons, and two daughters to be grown. After many years of residence in Savannah, the family removed to and lived some years in Waycross from which place they finally settled in Jacksonville, Florida where they now live. He died there very suddenly with something apoplexy some four or five years ago, his death causing a great shock and much grief among his family and friends. For many years he was an active member of the Methodist church and for several years superintendent of the Sunday school in Wesley Memorial church in Savannah. His daughters are all unmarried and one of his sons Richard, who lives in Jacksonville, Fla. is said to be a young man of great business activity and success. His widow still lives in Jacksonville with her family."
