Benjamin Church on the Fall River near to the head of the Great Falls. 298. Joseph Borden

1Mrs. Thomas Eugene Hooker, Earle, Patience of Perquimans County, N.C., New England Historical and Genealogical Register 104:227, pg 229. "      Mrs. Thomas Eugene Hooker, Earle, Patience of Perquimans County, N.C., New England Historical and Genealogical Register 104:227, pg 229. "On 20 july 1911 the New Bedford Public Library, New Bedford, Mass., came into possession of a manuscript by the Rev. Pardon G. Seabury. There was nothing in these papers to indicate when the manuscript was compiled. However, pages 44 & 45 give the following: "Descendants of Richard & Joan Borden" compiled by Rev. Pardon Gray Seabury, p. 44 - "#367 Joseph Borden, Ships Carpenter, Core Sound, N. C., married Hannah Stafford: Children, 6th Gen.: #444 Mary, b. at Core Sound in N. C., married Samuel Little of Little Compton, R. I., Dec. 15, 1771;  #445 Theophilus, b. Core Sound, N. C., married Anna Springer;  #446 Josiah, b. Core Sound, N. C., married Susanna Salsbury (widow) mother of Capt. Samuel & Wanton Salisbury of Tiverton, R. I. (Tiverton, R. I., Bk. 5, p. 63: married 6-15-1784 by Thos. Durfee, Justice)." According to this manuscript, Joseph Borden removed at an early day to Carolina, probably with his uncle William Borden, who established himself as a shipbuilder on Core Sound or NewPort river near to the present site of Beaufort, N. C."
The manuscript continues with information concerning the Stafford family of Tiverton, and refers to letters written to their parents by the children of Josiah and Susannah Stafford. A letter from Samuel and Sarah Stafford addressed to their honoured mother, then a Widow in Tiverton, dated 17 Feb. 1751, came from Nine Partners, N. Y. Another from Hannah Borden, to the same, was dated at Core Sound, N. C., 27 July 1752. A third letter is from PATIENCE who had married a man by the name of Earl, 21 Oct. 1752 (error - it was 29 Jun 1745 TM). Another from Patience Earl to her mother was dated "North Carolina the 19th of 3 mo 1773." [Note: Could this have been erroneous) copied, and have been 1753 instead of 1773, as the mother, Sara Stafford, was dead in 1754?]
On 22 Dec. 1764 in Perquimans County, N. C., "Miss Sarah Earles" was married to George Walton, Richard Hodges, security (Hathaway, 3-413). Then, on 8 April 1765 in Tiverton, " --- Patience Earll of the County of Perquimans in North Carolina, widow, for Sundry good causes --- by these presents do -- appoint -- my trusty and well beloved Friend GEORGE WALTON of ye sd County in North Carolina, marriner, my true & Lawful Attorney to Sell & Deliver for me and in my name & to my use. Behoof all my Right or property - in the house & Land that was my mother, Sarah Staffords thirds Laying in Tiverton in the Government of Rhode Island in New England ----" etc. Signed Patience Earll."
Wit: Noah Chase and John Low.  Received and recorded 31 Oct 1765, by Restcome Sanford, Town Clerk (Tiverton deeds, I-405). It can hardly be doubted that Sarah Earle, who married George Walton in Perquimans County, N.C., on 22 Dec. 1784, was the daughter of John Earle, Jr. and his wife Patience.  We also know that John and Patience had a son, John, born 28 Dec. 1748."." Joseph Borden is the half-brother of John Earl Jr.  See John's source information for preceeding information in this publication.

Borden, Borden, Richard & Joan,  who settled in Portsmouth R.I., Historical and genealogical record of the descendants..., Albany, N.Y. : Joel Munsell, [1899], pg 125, FHL US/CAN Film 512. "Thomas ... alone of all his family, sympathized with the mother country and joined the British army before their raid on Fall River in 1777.  He continued in the service of the King as corporal in the British army and assisted in gaining possession of Canada for the English.  The very property that Thomas Borden drew from the government for his services is at Grand Prie, and still in possession of his descendants.  The family name seems to have been spelled Bardain in Nove Scotia, but in our mind there can be no mistake in taking this Thomas Bardain to be the Thomas Borden who, as history tells us, joined the British army and was not again heard from by his American relatives."
