Mildred Nelson Negbaur

1FindaGrave.com, http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=100134954. "A very long article about the romance of Mildred Negbaur (a tailor's daughter) and Matthew Sterling Borden, the son of a wealthy businessman was in the Newark Daily Advocate (Newark, Ohio) on Sept 27, 1897.

Matthew's father sent him off to Europe after the first marriage (@1893) and it appears that Mildred was "bought off." As part of the deal, she was to obtain a divorce from Matthew.

Upon graduation from Yale, Matthew re-kindled his relationship with Mildred.

They married again on Sept 7 1897 in Worcester, Mass - the first was probably annulled."

Jefferson Borden

"While Colonel Richard Borden handled his responsibilities for the family enterprises, Jefferson Borden exceeded even his nephew Holder in the estimation of those who counted the most: the Providence investors. He did so by expanding the American Print Works and organizing mills to supply it with print cloth.  Jefferson was born in 1801 in Freetown, twelfth of the thirteen children of Thomas M. Borden. Like Richard, he worked on the farm and helped with the sloop, but like Holder he left at sixteen to clerk in a provision store, first in Troy and later in Providence. In 1821 he became clerk of the Iron works and a year later its Providence representative. Jefferson Borden became known for his ability to develop markets for the Iron Works products. He remained in Providence for fifteen years, a close friend of the Valentines, his relatives by marriage and original investors in the Iron Works, but returned home when Holder died in 1837. For the next thirty-nine years he managed the American Print Works. In 1839 he became one of the major trustees of the Valentine estate worth two hundred thousand dollars, which he put to good use in expanding manufacturing capacity."
