Archie Burden

Archie M. Burden, 81, of 1833E CR 350N, LaPorte, died Tuesday, June 26, at 3 p.m. at Fountainview Terrace Nursing Home.

He was born Jan. 8, 1898 in LaPorte County to Stacy and Anna (Marx) Burden and had lived here all his life. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and was retired from Allis-Chalmers Mfg. Co.

On March 12, 1918, in LaPorte, he married Elsie M. Ahrndt (579) who died March 26, 1969.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Kenneth (Mary) Jones (581), of LaPorte; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. One daughter and two brothers preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday at the Haverstock Funeral Home with Rev. Edward A. Meyer officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home after 1 p.m. Thursday and until the time of the services Friday. Burial will be in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery.

He was born on October 15, 1927 in Argos, IN to Jesse E. and Alta G. (Watkins) Burden. On February 21, 1953 in the Ridgedale Presbyterian Church, South Bend, he married Evelyn Mae (Malley) Burden, who preceded him in death on June 7, 2006 after fifty-three years of marriage.

Mr. Burden is survived by daughter, Kathy Qulbain of Chicago, IL; son, Scott A. Burden of South Bend, IN; six grandchildren, Jalel Abu-Qulbain, Majeed Abu-Qulbain, Dena Byrd, Jesse McRae, Sherri McRae and Nathaniel Lewis; three great grandchildren, Tyler, Jeremiah and Mikael and brother, Jim Burden of Georgetown, TX. His daughter, Lori Lewis preceded him in death on August 11, 2007. A sister, Frances Snyder and brother, Robert Burden also preceded him in death.

Mr. Burden served honorably in the United States Army in the Korean War. He retired from ARA Services where he was an auditor, worked in accounting and sales. He was a member of the Calvert Rod & Gun Club, DAV and the American Legion.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, September 19, 2010 in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St. South Bend. The family will receive friends from 3:00-5:00 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home. Burial will take place at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Kenneth Waldo Burden may be offered to the Alzheimer's Services, 922 E. Colfax Avenue, South Bend, IN 46617 or to the American Cancer Society 601 W. Burden of South Bend, IN and her ex husband, John Lewis of South Bend, IN. Her mother, Evelyn preceded her in death on June 7, 2006.

Lori was a lifelong area resident. She worked as a cashier for Kreamo Thrift Store and 12th Street Village Mart. Lori was a very spiritual person who was especially at peace in natural settings. She enjoyed shopping and gift giving.

survives. He was a retired employee of the South Bend Water Works.

Other Survivors include; a son, Donald F. of South Bend; four grandchildren; six
brothers, Frank, Herman, Warren, Carl and Kenneth, all of South Bend, and Harold
of Osceola; five sisters, Mrs. Emma Roessler, Mrs. Helene Detterich, Mrs. Mary
Wilibey, Mrs. Irene Gushwa, all of South Bend, and Mrs. Kathryn Harmon of
Osceola.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Hollis Funeral Home with Rev. Edward
Brueseke, pastor, Zion United Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will be in
St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Friends may call at the funeral home after noon
Friday.
