Leggett was living in San Bruno, CA at the time of interview. She attended Cypress Bayou elementary school in Richland Par., LA. She gave the valedictory address of the 1920-21 session. (Original in file.) She graduated from Delhi (LA) High school, attended Louisana Tech, Ruston, LA for two semesters and graduated from Tyler Commercial College, Tyler, TX. She joined the Midway Methodist Church, Mitchener, Richland Par., LA when she was 11 years old, in 1912. She taught elementary school in Madison Parish at a salary of $85 a month. She then worked at Tallulah Bakery, owned by John Post, for two years, leaving that job for her education at Tyler Commercial College. When she came home she worked at Morgan & Lindsay, Tallulah, LA, for approximately one and a half years, which earned her $9.00 a week. She then worked at Tallulah Ice Plant as book-keeper (about $80.00 a month salary), at Chicago Mill as a stenographer (salary $65.00 plus commission - a little over $100.00 commission per month), Franklin Furniture Store owned by Gene and Inez Blanchard Wallace, USDA Entomology Laboratory as secretary (salary $225.00 per month). Sallie married Bryan Foster in 1931 by whom she had 3 children before his death in 1938. She was working at the USDA lab at the time of her marriage to Tilford Watts in 1946. Tilford died in 1966. She moved to San Bruno, CA in 1971 when she married Erasmus Mervin, "Raz" Leggett. She joined Vacaville Chapter, Eastern Star, September 1972. She joined the United Methodist church of San Bruno, CA in June, 1972. After Raz's death, Sallie moved back to Tallulah, LA where she died in 2000." Image.


Gillie Jane Watts

In addition to her parents, she leaves a brother, a half-brother and two half-sisters.

The Young Funeral Home was in charge.

Eliza Jane Tharp

Burial will be in Providence Memorial Cemetery, Tallulah, under direction of Crothers Funeral Home of Tallulah.

Mrs. Land died at 4:20 Monday morning at the Madison Parish Hospital following a lengthy illness. She was a member of the Methodist Church.

Survivors include one son, Johnny L. Land, Tallulah; five daughters, Miss Gushen Land, Mrs. T. M. Watts, Mrs. Johnny Stocks, Mrs. Eula Wilkins, all of Tallulah, Mrs. Charles Pollard, Clarksville, Miss., and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
