"While at home in the arms of his family, LaVern James Arnold, was taken up to be with the Lord on Monday, May 7, 2012, in Elma. He was just a few weeks shy of 101 years old. LaVern was born May 20, 1911, in Olympia to James Newton and Ethel May (Waters) Arnold.
His parents left Olympia when he was very young. He attended schools in Colorado, Nebraska and Ohio before returning to Elma over 76 years ago. LaVern worked for the CCC in Elma, Shafer Brothers, Aberdeen Shipyards, and for the last 27 years of his career, at the Elma School District.
LaVern met his “Baby”, Dolly Carmelita Borden, and they were married in Olympia on March 13, 1937. She preceded him in death in 2009. LaVern’s priorities were his family and the Lord, and his hobbies included gardening, fishing, and traveling with his wife.
LaVern is survived by his children, James W. (Sally) Arnold, of Elma, Marguerite (Paul) Allshouse, of Lynden, Washington, William (Linda) Arnold, of Elma, Terry (Darlene) Arnold, of Grand Mound, Randy (Elizabeth) Arnold, of Elma, Shelly (Valerie) Arnold, of Elma, Steven (Laura) Arnold, of Elma, and Byron (Dawn) Arnold, of Elma; 29 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.
In addition to his wife, Dolly and his parents; LaVern is preceded in death by his son, Richard Dennis “Dicky” Arnold, at the age of 4; grandsons, Kevin Allshouse at age 20 and Joshua Arnold at 24; and his daughter through marriage, Alice Arnold at age 30. He is also preceded in death by his brother, Everett Arnold and sisters, Laura Curtindale and Viola Harpel.
The public is invited to a Celebration of Life led by Pastor LouAnn Houle, beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 11, 2012, at the Elma Church of God. The family suggests memorial donations be made to LaVern’s home church, the Elma Church of God, 109 South 6th St., Elma, WA 98541.

Dolly Carmelita Borden

She was 90. Dolly was born December 19, 1918 in Satsop, Washington to William and Alta Caly Borden. Dolly graduated from Elma high school in 1936.
She married LaVern Arnold on March 13, 1937 at their Pastor's home in Olympia. Dolly was a homemaker for her large family. She was involved in 4-H and the Elma Senior Center. She enjoyed all types of crafts and cherished her role as a Sunday school teacher for more than 50 years. Dolly is survived by her husband, LaVern of the family home.
She is also survived by her son, Jim (Sally) Arnold, Elma; daughter, Marguerite (Paul) Allshouse, Lynden; sons, Will (Linda) Arnold, Terry (Darlene) Arnold, Randy (Elizabeth) Arnold, Shelly (Valerie) Arnold, Steve (Laura) Arnold and Byron (Dawn) Arnold, all of Elma. Dolly is also survived by her sister, Midge Marshall, her brother, Dick Borden, 29 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Dolly is preceded in death by her parents, William and Alta Borden, son Richard, grandsons, Kevin Allshouse and Joshua Arnold, 2 sisters and 6 brothers.
Visitation will be from 6-8 PM Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at Whiteside Family Mortuary, Elma. Memorial Services will be held 1PM Thursday, February 5, 2009 at the Grange Hall in Elma.

She was born in Black Creek, Wis., and was a 1945 graduate of LaCross Teachers College, LaCross, Wis.
She married Richard R. Borden on Oct. 26, 1946.
Mrs. Borden moved to Washington in 1946 and, in 1951, settled in Quilcene, where she was a member of the Quilcene School Board, Royal Neighbors of America and TOPS, as well as a volunteer for many community activities.
Mrs. Borden, who was also member of St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Port Townsend, collected angels and lighthouses and enjoyed sports.
Survivors include her husband; daughters and sons-in-law, Doris and Leslie Wagner of Woodinville, Kathleen and Don Curtis of Kent and Karen and Ron Bard of Issaquah; sister and brother-in-law Bernice and Jim Friend of Olympia; sister Joan Harrell of Visalia, Calif.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services: Thursday, Nov. 17, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., visitation in Kosec Funeral Home, 1615 Parkside Drive, Port Townsend; Friday, Nov. 18, additional visitation in Quilcene First Presbyterian Church, 294433 Highway 101, until the 2:40 p.m., funeral at which the Revs. John Topal and Becky Anderson will officiate. A reception in the church will follow the service.
Memorials: Charity of choice. The family requests no flowers.
