Notes

Matthew Scott

The following information was sent to T.Mason by Roger (Bud and Dianne Lincoln) on 2 Apr 2007.

Matthew Scott brought his family from Ireland to Fall River at some point between 1872 and 1880, probably 1873. Matthew's wife was known in the family as Jane, however, the 1880 Fall River federal census lists his wife's name as Catherine. Both are probably correct. It is said in the family that the Scotts came from Northern Ireland.

Matthew at 48 yrs., is listed as Mathew in the 1880 Fall River, Bristol, Massachusetts census, ED 88, Page 376B, enumerated 3 Jun 1880, as head of his Almond Street household; occ., Laborer; Ireland born of Ireland born parents. With Matthew and Jane are the following children, all listed below: John, 20; Martha, 18; Elizabeth, 16; Robert, 14; David, 10; and Sarah, 8. Also with the family were two boarders, Elizabeth Hamilton at age 50 and what was probably her son, William Hamilton at age 20. She was Ireland born of Ireland born parents with no occ. He was MA born of Ireland born parents and "Works in Cotton Mill".
It appears that Matthew and his family lived in one apt. of a three apt. tenamenet. His daughter Catherine, and her husband William Grimshaw, and son Edward, lived in another of the apts. in the same house. (See listing for Catherine)

Catherine Jane Freen

The following information was sent to T.Mason by Roger (Bud and Dianne Lincoln) on 2 Apr 2007.

This lady was known by the family as Jane, however the 1880 Fall River federal census lists her as Catherine. Her own death certificate does not name her parents surnames, only the given names, however, the death death certificate of her daughter, Jane Ann (Scott) Hart, names Catherine as Catherine Freen. There is an LDS record of a marriage of Matthew Scott to Catherine Freen on 1 Oct 1847 in Ireland with no further information, not that that proves anything, but I am quite confident that Freen is indeed Catherine's maiden name.

Jane at 52 yrs., is listed as Catherine in the 1880 Fall River, Bristol, Massachusetts census, ED 88, Page 376B, enumerated 3 Jun 1880, as wife of Mathew Scott; occ., Keeping House; Ireland born of Ireland born parents.

Information provided on Jane's death certificate is as follows:
Name: Catherine Scott
Date of death: 26 May 1888
Place of death: Fall River
Residence: Fall River
Marital status: married, wife of Matthew
Age: 59 yrs., 9 mos.
Birthplace: Ireland
Cause of death: Cancer
