Daniel Cloud Jr.

He married Mary Elizabeth Buck on 2 May 1833 (also in Bible) in Shenandoah Co. Va. He was a farmer and landowner in 1837 with 443 acres in Gooney Manor. He was granted 650 acres in Ohio in 1815 from his father's will but continued to reside in Va. He was one of the 1st ten Justices of Warren County- 24 March 1836.He and Mary Elizabeth had 4 children: Mary Piece- 1834, Wm. Mordecai-1835, Sarah Elizabeth- 1839, and Daniel Mountjoy- 1837. She and Daniel, Jr., had 4 children: Mary Pierce- 1834, Wm. Mordecai- 1835, Daniel Mountjoy - 1837, & Sarah Elizabeth- 1839-1843 (age 4). Mary Elizabeth Cloud obit says she was a life-long Methodist. Daniel Mountjoy Cloud

He attended Dickinson College, graduating in 1858. Cloud taught at Charlotte Hall, Maryland from 1858 to 1859. In 1860 he taught at Salina, Alabama. He then accepted a position at the Biblical Institute in Conrad, New Hampshire. When the Civil War started, he returned to his native state and joined the 7th Virginia Cavalry. Promoted to captain in 1863, he transferred to the Secret Service of the Confederacy. Cloud helped to coordinate Confederate spies in Washington, D.C. He was involved in the transportation of intelligence to Richmond. At one point he had plans to abduct President Lincoln, but the plot fell through. After the war, Cloud was superintendent of public schools in Vicksburg, Mississippi. He was later admitted to the bar and remained in Vicksburg for the rest of his life.
