News was received by Mr. J. B. Sparrow Monday morning that his sister, Mrs. Alice White of Pittsylvania had died from rheumatism.
MARTINSVILLE DAILY BULLETIN, Tue., April 18, 1939, p. 1, col. 2:
John B. Sparrow, 82, long identified with the tobacco industry in Martinsville, died suddenly early today at his home on Church Street.
He was found dead in bed when members of his family called him this morning. Although death came unexpectedly, he had been in declining health for the past several months and had retired actively from business.
He was born on October 25th, 1857, the son of Abner W. and Mary Strickland Sparrow, Pittsylvania County.
As a young man he entered the tobacco manufacturing business in Danville, going with the Arnett - Wemple Tobacco Company, and later becoming an executive of the firm.
In 1893 he joined his brother, the late Jeff D. Sparrow, and moved to Martinsville where they organized the firm of Sparrow Brothers Tobacco Company.
Later the firms' name was changed to Sparrow and Gravely Tobacco Company.
Some years ago when Larus and Brothers Company purchased the company, he disposed of his interests.
Mr. Sparrow was an active member of the First Baptist church, was a deacon and active in various church activities.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Gertrude Brown Sparrow, and three children: Mrs. T. Spencer Williamson of Richmond; John B. Sparrow Jr. and Kavanaugh Sparrow, both of Martinsville.
Funeral services will be held at the residence Wednesday afternoon with burial to follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
