I. and went to New Jersey with his father, RICHARD, about 1665 when his father became interested in New Jersey lands. A share of this land was assigned to BENJAMIN under the Nicolls Patent and he settled permanently in New Jersey. He settled in Middleton, Monmouth Co., N. J. and in Rancocas Creek, Burlington Co., N. J. (probably in what is now Laurel Township). He became a justice and a commissioner in Monmouth County in 1670; assemblyman from this county in 1692, 1694, 1695, and 1698; road commissioner, 1693-17H; agent for the receipt of Monmouth county taxes, 1705-1706. He married (l) ABIGAIL GROVER (b. 1654/5 - d. Jan. 8, 1728), daughter of JAMES and REBECCA GROVER; (2) Susannah who survived him, and was qualified as administrix of his estate on June 6, 1728. Susannah was probably the daughter of John Page whose estate was settled, June 19, 1730. Payments were made to Susannah Borden (the first name on the list) and others.

""     IX.  Richard Borden, son of Matthew and Joan, born at Hedcorn in the County of Kent, England, and baptized 22 February, 1595-6.  He married in Hedcorn Church 28 September, 1625, Joan Fowle,[11] removed from the parish at Hedcorn to the neighboring parish of Cranbrook, 1628, and came thence to New England 1637/8; settled at Portsmouth, Rhode Island (1637/8), where he died 25 May, 1671.  His nuncupative will was admitted to probate 31 May, 1671, by the Town Council of Portsmouth. Richard Borden was a surveyor and acquired large tracts of land in Rhode Island and in East Jersey (Monmouth County). He was Freeman of Portsmouth, 16 Mar 1641, of a committee to treat with the Dutch, 18 May 1653; Assistant, town of Portsmouth, 1653-1654, Commissioner, 1654-1657; Treasurer 1654-1655; Freeman, 1655, and Deputy from Portsmouth to the Rhode Island General Assembly, 1667, 1670.  His wife died 15 July, 1688.

"In 1628 they moved to Crumbrook. In 1635 he sailed on the "Elizabeth and Ann" to New England arriving in Boston neck near Roxberry, Mass. On 10 June 1638 he was admitted as inhabitant of the Island Aquidneck (North end of the island of Rhode Island), having submitted himself to the government that shall be established. He was a man of education having been taken under the protection of his uncle who was Dean of the Cathedral Church at Rochester. He was a surveyor and was contracted on 2 Nov 1638 to survey and map or plot all lands near about. They were staunch Quakers and became members of the Rhode Island Colony. He signed the Freeman's oath on 16 March 1641. In 1653-4 he was elected treasurer of the United Colonies. He owned works in R.I. and in Monmouth Co., East Jersey. On 6 Sep 1651 he bought sixty acres, Shadrach Manton Land of Providence, near Newtokonkonut Hill. He was governor's assistant at Providence Plantation, 1653-4, commissioner from Portsmouth to the General Court 1654-57, treasurer of the United Colonies 1654-55, Deputy from Portsmouth to the General Assembly of Rhode Island 1667, 1670, and a member of council of Way in 1675. On 23 June 1664 the Duke of York granted Shrewsbury, East Jersey to Sir George Carteret and Richard established there. In 1667 he was one of the original purchasers of lands in New Jersey from certain Indians. He was buried in the burial ground of the Society of Friends at Portsmouth, R.I. The children's births documented by the Friend's Monthly meetings at Newport. His nuncupative will was admitted to probate 31 May 1671 by Town Council of Portsmouth. May 1- Executor, son Matthew."

""5.  Richard Borden (Matthew, Thomas, William, Edmund), of Headcorn and Cranbrook, co. Kent, and of Portsmouth, R.I., baptized at Headcorn 22 Feb. 1595/6, died at Portsmouth 25 May 1671.  He married at Headcorn, 28 Sept. 1625, Joane Fowle, who died at Portsmouth 15 July 1688, daughter of Richard Fowle of Frittenden and Headcorn, co. Kent, yeoman.
    Richard Borden inherited from his father lands in Headcorn, but in 1628 he moved to Cranbrook, where his wife had relatives.  She, by the will of her uncle, Francis Fowle of Cranbrook, clothier, dated 8 Oct. 1632 and proved 3 Apr. 1633, was to receive his messuages in Cranbrook, after the death of his widow, Elizabeth Fowle.  In 1637/8 Richard Borden emigrated from Cranbrook to New England, and settled at Portsmouth, R.I., where he held various public offices.  He was freeman there  16 Mar. 1640/1, a member of a committee to treat with the Dutch, 18 May 1653, assistant at Portsmouth, 1653, 1654, treasurer, 1654, 1655, commissioner, 1654, 1656, 1657, and deputy from Ports mouth to the Rhode Island General Assembly, 1667, 1670.  He was a surveyor and acquired large tracts of land in Rhode Island and in East Jersey (Monmouth County).  He was buried in the burial ground of the Society of Friends at Portsmouth.  His nuncupative will, of which an abstract is given in Austin's "Genealogical Disctionary of Rhode Island," was admitted to probate by the town council of Portsmouth 31 May 1671.  It mentions his wife Joan and all his children except Richard and Elizabeth, who probably died young.  Five of his children were born in England, and the remaining seven at Portsmouth, R.I.

ii.    Thomas, of Portsmouth and Prvodence, R.I., bapt. at Headcorn 3 Oct. 1627; d. 25 Nov. 1676; m. 20 Jan. 1663/4 Mary Harris, who d. 22 Mar. 1717/18, daughter of William and Susanna Harris of Providence.  Eight children.
iii.   Francis, of Portsmouth, R.I., and Shrewsbury, Monmouth Co., East Jersey, bapt. at Cranbrook 23 Dec. 1628; d. in Monmouth Co., East Jersey, 19, 1 mo. 1705/6; m. 12, 4 mo. 1677 Jane Vickars.  He moved to Shrewsbury about 1677.  In his will dated 4 May 1703, he bequeathed to his son Francis his land in the parish of Goudhurst, co. Kent, "as the same is conveyed to me by virtue of Francis Fowle of Cranbrook in said county of Kent" by his will dated 8 Oct. 1632.  He was the ancestor of the Pennsylvania Bordens.  Four children.
iv.   Mary, bapt. at Cranbrook 13 Jan. 1632/3; d. before 1691; m. John Cooke of Portsmouth, R. I., who d. in 1691, son of Thomas Cook.  eleven children.
v.    Elizabeth, bapt. at Cranbrook 25 May 1643; probably d. young.
vi.   Matthew, of Portsmouth, R.I., b. at Portsmouth in May 1638, and said in the Friends' records to be "the first English child born on Rhode Island;" d. 5 July 1708; m. 4 Mar. 1673/4 Sarah Clayton, b. in 1654, d. 19 Apr. 1735.  His will was dated 28 Mar. 1705.  Ten children.
vii.  John, of Portsmouth, R.I., b. at Portsmouth in Sept. 1640; d. 4 June 1716; m. 25 Dec. 1670 Mary Earle, b. about 1655, d. in June 1734, daughter of William and Mary (Walker) Earle.  His will was dated 24 Feb. 1715/6 and was proved 9 July 1716.  Nine children.
viii.  Joseph, of Portsmouth, R.I., and Barbados, B.W.I., b. at Portsmouth 3 July 1643; m. Hope---.  Three children recorded in Rhode Island before 1674.
ix.    Sarah, b. at Portsmouth in May 1644; d. after 1705; m. Jonathan Holmes of Newport, R.I., who d. in 1713, son of Obadiah and Catherine Holmes.  Nine children.
x.     Samuel, of Portsmouth, R.I., and Westchester, N.Y., b. at Portsmouth in July 1645; m. 1 June 1679, being then of Westchester, Elizabeth Crosse.  Probably he left issue.
xi.    Benjamin, of Portsmouth, R.I., and of Monmouth and Burlington Counties, N.J., b. at Portsmouth in May 1649; d. after 1718; m. 22 Sept. 1670 Abigail Grover, daughter of James Grover.  He was in Burlington Co., N.J., by 1670.  Ten children.
